Trenca Overcomes Pair of Crashes During Earl Halaquist Memorial

Inside Line Promotions – AFTON, N.Y. (Sept. 2, 2014) – Last Tuesday was the epitome of how Joe Trenca’s season has gone.

Trenca showcased speed throughout the Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints event at I-88 Speedway only to be caught up in a pair of crashes during the Earl Halaquist Memorial.

“Everything happened right in front of us,” he said. “There was no way to avoid it. It stinks because we had a real good car. Just bad luck hurt us again.”

The event opened with Trenca finishing second in his heat race to garner a spot into the dash and the feature redraw. He pulled the No. 3 in the dash redraw and ended with a fifth-place result as the team experimented. Trenca then got the No. 10 during the feature redraw to line up on the outside of the fifth row for the main event.

Unfortunately, he was involved in an accident on the opening lap. His crew changed the right rear tire and sent him back to the track, where he rebounded to climb back toward the top 10. However, an incident occurred on Lap 23 and Trenca was unable to avoid the melee.

Fighting a damaged car and being forced to restart at the back of the field, Trenca maneuvered to an 11th-place finish in the closing laps.

His scheduled event at Utica-Rome Speedway in Vernon, N.Y., was rained out on Sunday.

Trenca is slated to return to Utica-Rome Speedway this Saturday for the $10,000-to-win Cole Cup with the Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints and the Patriot Sprint Tour.

“The goal is definitely to get a good time trial lap and get through the heat race and have a good starting spot for the feature,” he said. “We’ve struggled there. It’s a tough track to get a hold of. If I could get a win it’d be a dream come true, but a top five would be a great accomplishment.”
