Wednesdays with Wayne – $10,000 Cole Cup this Weekend!
Wayne Johnson is heading back north and east this weekend. On Friday night, he’ll compete at the Ohsweken Speedway in Ontario, where he has won twice this year. Saturday night, the team will tow to Vernon, New York and the Utica-Rome Speedway for the $10,000 Cole Cup. Last weekend the Wayne Johnson Racing #77x team finished second and sixth in ASCS-Warrior action at the Randolph County Raceway near Moberly, Missouri.
Saturday’s prelim saw Wayne drive from fifth to second in his heat race. “The heat race went really well,” he says. “That put us on the outside of the front row for the feature. I got a bad start. The outside wasn’t the best place to be, and I fell back to third. I got back to second, and then I got to the lead and led seven or eight laps.”
Things got rough on the cushion. “I got to the lead running the top,” says Wayne. “It was so rough up there, and (Jon) Agan had already flipped. I moved down the track. I figured (Danny) Lasoski was the guy I had to beat, and he wasn’t going to mess with the top. I figured he’d run the bottom but I was wrong.”
Lasoski would take the lead and Wayne would checker second. “I ran him down there at the end,” he says. “I don’t know if he had a motor problem or what. I had a shot at him with about a lap to go. I screwed up and jumped the curb.”
The second place finish locked Wayne into Sunday’s $4,000 to win finale. He would draw a starting spot outside the front row. “It was really slick, and we just haven’t been very good in the slick this year,” he says of the feature. “We were spinning the tires and ended up sixth. It laid rubber in three and four, but I was even loose in the rubber.”
Wayne talked of his upcoming weekend while driving north. “We’re going to race at Ohsweken on Friday,” he says. “Obviously, we’re looking forward to getting back there. On Saturday, we’re headed to Utica-Rome Speedway for the Cole Cup.”
